Istnieją dwa rodzaje zielonych dachów:

Intensywnie dachy zielone: rośliny potrzebują grubej warstwy podłoża. Zielony dach jest porównywalny z prawdziwym ogrodem. Konstrukcja dachu musi być jednak wystarczająco wytrzymała, aby utrzymać ciężar podłoża.

Ekstensywne dachy zielone: wybiera się odpowiednie podłoże odpowiednie dla roślin typu sedum. W tym przypadku wysokość i waga podłoża mają mniejsze znaczenie. Nadają się one do lekkich konstrukcji nośnych.
